he retention rate at South Dakota’s four technical institute’s is 78 percent, which matches last year’s rate. The state Board of Technical Education heard a report on the retention rates at its meeting earlier today. The retention rate measures all students who enroll one fall and return to the institution the following fall, in this case, fall 2017 to fall 2018.

At its meeting earlier today, the state Board of Technical Education heard a report on job placement of technical institute graduates. The board also approved two new programs at Western Dakota Technical Institute and several technical certificates in the Information Technology program at Southeast Technical Institute.

The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program today named Mitchell Technical Institute and Southeast Technical Institute among the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million in prize funds, as well as the Siemens Technical Scholars Program student scholarships.

The State Board of Technical Education has approved a joint proposal from Lake Area Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute and Western Dakota Technical Institute to create two-year registered nursing programs at each technical institute.

The Board of Technical Education held its first official meeting and elected officers today in Rapid City. Dana Dykhouse of Sioux Falls has been elected to a two-year term as board president, Bob Faehn of Watertown as vice president and Terry Sabers of Mitchell as secretary.
